Kentucky's Workforce Falling Behind in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
Kentucky's success in the digital economy of the 21st century is dependent upon having a workforce that is strong in the disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Unfortunately, Kentucky faces an uphill struggle in developing its workforce in these important areas. The Council on Postsecondary Education's (CPE) Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Task Force recently issued a report outlining strategies to improve Kentucky's faltering STEM standing.
The STEM report cited the following:

Kentucky ranked 49th in the nation in the number of bachelor's degrees conferred in science and engineering (2003);
-
Kentucky ranked 48th in science and engineering degrees as share of degrees conferred;
-
Kentucky ranked 47th in the number of scientists and engineers;
-
Kentucky ranked 45th in the number of patents issued; and
-
Kentucky ranked 42nd in the number of high-tech jobs.
The need to boost performance in STEM fields is also an important issue at the national level. Thirty years ago, the United States ranked third worldwide in the number of science graduates; now the U.S. ranks 17th. Additionally, Asian universities produce eight times more engineering bachelor's degrees than the U.S.
